The Opening

It all began with a song called You Could Be. A surreal, psychedelic rock message of hope and honesty, inspired by my love for the sound of late era Beatles. 

At over eight and a half minutes, it wasn’t just a tune; it was the vision for this first album. From the moment it came together on my trusty old Larrivee acoustic guitar, I knew it needed a full production. But not one shaped by click tracks, drum loops, or autotune. It had to sound like what I heard in my head: layered voices, swirling instruments, and raw emotion. No digital shortcuts. Certainly no AI. Just traditional song writing and recording processes, produced, mixed and mastered with care, with a sound rooted in the '60s, '70s, and '80s.

That song opened the floodgates. More followed, some new, some re-imaginings of older songs, each demanding the same treatment. After countless hours in the studio, the first album of The Opening was born.

These songs are unlike anything I’d released before. They stand apart from my electronic work as Ooeez, and the unreleased acoustic singer songwriter songs that have lived on scraps of paper and phone voice notes for years and still do, known only by me and my loved ones.

This music leans more into my love of analogue warmth and vintage textures. Not just out of nostalgia, but because that’s where the songs seemed to come from. I just followed their lead. Even on my guitar these songs were suggestive of quirky psychedelic rock tones, with a touch of strangeness and echoes of the more experimental artists who shaped me like The Doors, Bowie, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, early Stones, alongside the cartoon soundtracks and other sonic oddities that filled my youth.

The Opening is just a name, a doorway into these songs, which are soon to be made available on vinyl and all major digital platforms.
